Unplugged Cinema

當我得知臺南麻豆有一間日治時期所建造的電姬戲院時，對於這美麗的影院名稱無法忘懷，而後又閱讀南瀛電影院相關文獻，更十分驚艷在臺南曾文、北門地區一帶，麻豆為至今少數仍有電影院經營的城鎮。加上總爺藝文中心的中山堂，也曾放映電影提供附近民眾欣賞，因而啟發我於駐村期間想要在此建造一個小小的電影院。對於電影的形式，令我著迷的是約17世紀，也就是「電影史前史」時期所發展出的各種「動態影像」設備，當時的藝術家僅藉由視覺暫留現象、視覺感官和光學應用，就能設計出多樣化且精緻的影像裝置，例如走馬畫筒、偷窺箱和全景盒等，也孕育出始於19世紀末期我們所熟知的電影史觀。而我也從這些上百年的精華中學習，選用家用品、紙類和簡易工具，結合駐村期間的日記攝影，親手打造新復古的「不插電電影院」。

When I first heard of The Electric Princess House, a cinema built during the Japanese rule, in Madou district of Tainan City, I could not forget its beautiful name. Later, I read about cinemas in Tainan, and was very impressed with the fact that within big Tainan area, Madou was one of the neighborhood districts, where previous known as Zengwen and Beimen areas, that has been operated
many cinemas before, even until now. I have also heard that there were films that have been screened for public at Zhong-Shan Hall in Tsung-Yeh Arts and Cultural Center. Accordingly, I was inspired to build a mini cinema during my residence here. I am fascinated by 17th Century cinematic techniques - the so called equipment of “moving images” in various forms during the “pre-cinema history”- when artists simply used persistence of vision, visual sensation, and optical application to design diverse and fine image installations such as zoetropes, peep shows, and panoramas to nourish the birth of the cinema history that we are familiar with. From this hundreds of years old historical development, I learned to utilize daily articles, paper materials, and simple tools. I combined these with my daily shooting during the residence, and built my own new classical “Unplugged Cinema.”
